I was immediately drawn into the story and anxiously awaited turning the page to find out what happens next. It was also a good lesson in the history of Cuba and Castro's takeover without getting too involved in specific details. The author gives us just enough background to understand what really happened and how the Cuban people were treated. It was riveting to read and empathize with the main character, Julian, while following him on his journey from Cuba to Spain and then to America. The author makes you feel like you have befriended him and want to know how his life turns out. It's a great read!!Product details

Both my husband and I wanted to buy Concrete Wings; the fact that it was a Man's Fifty Year Journey sparked our interest. . Also, because I had cousins that left Cuba about the same time I felt I could learn how people were being treated in Cuba at that time. My husband read the book first and he could not put it down finished it in two days. He absolutely loved the story and how it was writeen was wonderful. I then picked up the book and also read it in a couple of days and felt Ms. Gandara's writing was superb. My interest was held from cover to cover and I would highly recommend this book.
What a book. Could not put it down since I wanted to known what happens to Julian on his life journey. The writer made me understand more fully the fear and suffering of the Cuban people during the Cuban Revolution. Julian definitely overcame adversity as well as being hopeful for a bright future. There were parts of the book that broke my heart and parts that made me laugh. In fact there were some situations in the story that made me laugh and feel like crying at the same time. Hats off to the author for writing a beautiful story.
Concrete wings.. one of my favorite new authors debut novel. A compelling story of one mans journey through life in Cuba and then to America. Beautifully written, captivating the reader with every word. Rich with intriguing twists and turns.

From the moment I started reading this book I was off on a very unique adventure. An adventure of maturity. intrigue and true love.
From the first page to the last page the author made me feel I was there too. Very few books have a quick pace and a sense of the emotions and moods of the characters. What a brave young boy who became a strong minded man. Where we would hide behind our mother's apron strings he was forced to take on the world. Also it's a love story based on a combination of miracles. Well written and a very emotional book. This is a must read. I already miss the book and will read it again to recapture the spellbinding moments.
A great novel! Suppressed passion entangled with the taboo canons of an epoch, this story hits a nerve on so many levels-both personally and socially. When desperate situations call for desperate measures, a young man beats the odds not only against circumstances he encounters along the way but also against that notorious time in history of his birth country a time of turmoil and uncertainty. This story is not only inspiring, but humbling as well for we must never forget the past. Superb first novel by Beverly Gandara! Looking forward to many more!
This book is an absolute historical treasure - a fictitious accounting inspired by the true story of the author’s husband’s defection (as well as other defectors) to the United States from Cuba as a young teen on the eve of the Bay of Pigs Invasion. I could not put this award-winning novel down as I read about Julian’s young life in Cuba - from family infidelities to domestic disturbances to young love, to his struggles in finding his footing in a new land. His desire to build a life for himself & his never-ending loyalty to his family are to be greatly admired. I consider this book a must read for teens, adults, & anyone who believes in the American dream.
Where do I begin to evaluate this exceptional novel? There are so many facets to this journey that it is hard to zero in on all of them. But I'll give it a try Julian's boyhood was rife with rejection and yes, abuse from his very own parents. Yet, he still had love and respect for them and tried to please them in every way. The author gives us a clear picture of life in pre-Castro Cuba with humor was well as clarity. But we also learn of the terrible effects of Castro's policies on the Cuban people though the eyes of a teenage boy who is sent out of the country--not so much for his own survival but to protect his family's wealth. Somehow, Julian survives many obstacles, showing us how fortitude in his adopted country makes him a success. This novel has it al! it is a page turner filled with mystery as well as good laughs, believe it or not. Highly recommended by this reader who appreciates fine writing.
