The first Norman castle is being built in Engla-lond--whether the Anglo-Saxons want it or not. Set in the Dark Ages of Engla-lond, the "Last Tales of Mercia" are ten short stories featuring real historical figures and characters from the "Sons of Mercia" series. All ten stories form a prequel to the novel, "Edric the Wild." Though strongly connected to the series, they can be read independently.

I enjoyed these stories immensely. The stories of Elwna, Ralph, and Audrey were by far the best.I highly recommend this to anyone interested in English history around the time of William the Conqueror. It's a quick read. For the most part each story flows into the next and if Woods were to make full novels for some of these characters I would readily read them. Her writing is very clear and I could easily envision what she described. I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.
I did have some issues with the stories, namely Sigurd's tale and the use of the "f" word.
Sigurd's tale was pretty pointless though. We hear about Sigurd often and there are hints in other stories that there will be a bittersweet tale about him and Godric's relationship. And in a way there was, but it added absolutely nothing to the building of Richard's castle or the lives of the other characters who had been introduced prior. Instead we are introduced to Alfric, who has no bearing and an overly dramatic, angtsy tale of Godric and Sigurd.
Woods uses the word the "f" word a number of times, used in some stories more than others. My issue is that this word wasn't in use at the time this is supposed to be taking place. It's commonly believed the late 1400s saw the wide use of the word and its use in the way the author presented it wasn't used until much later
